The new iPhone 15 Pro boasts a stunning design, featuring a titanium frame and smoothly rounded edges. This refined look makes it more appealing to hold compared to its predecessors. However, despite my initial admiration for its aesthetics, the truth is, like many others, I'll end up covering it with a case.
Confession of a Case User
Hi, I’m Jerry. For too long, I've pretended that the external design of my iPhone matters. Today, I confess—I am a case person. As much as I appreciate the iPhone's design and would love to use it as intended, experience tells me I can't. Here’s why.
Three Reasons for Using a Case
1. Anxiety and Protection
These beautifully crafted devices, with their elegant metal and glass finishes, are a sight to behold. However, the very thought of damaging such a masterpiece fills me with anxiety. Using an iPhone without a case alters my behavior—I become overly cautious, constantly worried about scratches and dents. This is no way to live. I can’t truly enjoy my iPhone while being haunted by the potential of minor damages that might as well be injuries to my own soul.
2. Grip and Practicality
The sleek metal and glass design, while visually appealing, makes the iPhone feel as slippery as a wet bar of soap. I've lost count of how many times my iPhone 15 Pro has nearly slipped through my fingers. Even with larger, flatter sides introduced in previous models, the device is still too slippery to handle securely. A case with a textured grip not only enhances security but also allows for easier handling, letting me use the phone more freely without fear of it slipping into disaster.
3. Customization and Style
Lastly, cases allow me to personalize my iPhone's look and feel on a whim. Whether I'm matching it to my mood, the day’s activities, or my outfit, the ability to change cases is a feature in itself. With a variety of cases—from rugged, protective ones to sleek and subtle designs—I can keep my iPhone’s appearance fresh and aligned with my personal style.
The Argument Against Naked iPhones
Despite the allure of a case-free iPhone, practical concerns prevail. While some may argue for simply using Apple Care or being more careful, these are not perfect solutions. Apple Care is expensive and doesn’t always cover minor cosmetic damages that don’t affect the iPhone's functionality. Plus, I want to enjoy my iPhone without a constant cloud of worry over it.
After years of trying to embrace the naked iPhone lifestyle, I’ve accepted that I am better off with a case. It enhances my user experience, reduces anxiety, and lets me personalize my device to better suit my life. And that’s perfectly okay.
